ADVANCE gets to participate in the annual Hobo Day Parade. This year the theme was “Never Stop Wandering”, our take on this theme was to honor the guy who wanders all over the planet - Waldo! We had a lot of fun this year even before we got to the parade sending a traveling Waldo all around ADVANCE. He visited every department- most more than once! The week of Hobo Week we started to get serious with our float prep. Thank you Ryan Hemmestad for lending your handyman skills to make our float structurally sound- I am pretty sure it is the strongest one yet! We put the talents of our Director of Residential Services to use and had her draw the float, we wanted to re-create certain themes from the Waldo books and chose to make our own version using places that are Brookings Landmarks. The rest of the Hobo Day Committee spent the next few days painting and perfecting the float. We think it turned out pretty great. It was a beautiful crisp sunny day on the actual parade day, perfect for walking in a parade! This may have been the year with the most crowds yet as we ran out of candy by main, but we still had plenty of chimes of “Happy Hobo Day” to send out to the crowd.
